Having been in the industry for over 13 years, Yuna, the Malaysian singer-songwriter who made her international debut in 2012 with her self-titled album talks to Grazia Malaysia about growth, hard work, and making lasting connections.

Her music was introduced to worldwide audiences through a remix of her song Lullabies by Canadian dubstep duo Adventure Club. Yuna continued to focus on her Malaysian projects after her debut, but turned her attention back to the United States in 2016 with her third international album, Chapters. The album’s lead single, Crush, featuring Usher, became the singer’s first RIAA-certified Gold single in 2020. Having collaborated with many American artists including Tyler, the Creator, G-Eazy, and Masego on her 2019 album Rouge, there’s a reason why the Malaysian singer is notable for pushing boundaries, remaining steadfast in her beliefs, religion and home country.

Though it hasn’t always been an easy ride, she talks about how she moves through these muddy waters with grace. “Sometimes you can’t change the things you don’t have control over, and I’ve made my peace with that.”

For Yuna, producing is not just a means to an end; it is also a way to express herself in a deeply personal way. She values the autonomy and freedom that comes with producing her own music, and the ability to create in her own space, surrounded by loved ones – and her cats.
