Director Wes Anderson is known for his unique narrative approach, idiosyncratic visual style and knack for tapping a show-stopping ensemble cast — and he pulled some of Hollywood’s biggest names for his latest cinematic endeavor.
His new film, Asteroid City, follows a series of world-changing events that dramatically disrupt the itinerary of a Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention in an American desert town in the 1950s. It boasts an A-list cast including acclaimed actors like Tom Hanks and Adrien Brody, to Tinseltown’s favorite blonde bombshells Scarlett Johansson and Margot Robbie, plus up-and-comers like Maya Hawke. On Tuesday, they all celebrated the premiere at Alice Tully Hall in New York City and Anderson‘s signature brand of whimsicality was on full display with their fashions.
Stars stepped on the desert-themed step-and-repeat paying sartorial homage to the filmmaker’s eccentricities. Robbie’s surrealist Schiaparelli dress featured a keyhole bellybutton detailing, while Johansson’s retro-coded Carolina Herrera gown was embellished with a playful rosette and Hawke’s custom black sequined Prada dress came together with a matching bedazzled swimming cap, inspired by the mid-century time period.
The men embraced monochromatic pastels, with the inimitably stylish Jeff Goldblum doing his thing in shades of slate blue, salmon and yellow. Rupert Friend and Bryan Cranston embraced earth-tones evocative of the desert landscape. Tony Revolori popped in lavender, Stephen Park painted the town teal and Jeffrey Wright stood out in marine blue.
Embracing their auteur’s quintessential aesthetic, it’s safe to say these stars understood the assignment.
Asteroid City hits theaters on June 23.
Margot Robbie wore a strapless black velvet corseted minidress from the Schiaparelli Spring/Summer 2023 Couture collection, with a keyhole bellybutton detailing and a pleated white silk skirt for the occasion, styled by Andrew Mukamal.
Scarlett Johansson hopped on the rosette trend in a white Carolina Herrera gown from the Resort 2024 collection with a ruched bodice, sparkling Gianvito Rossi heels and David Yurman pearl drop earrings, styled by Kate Young.
Inspired by the mid-century time period of Asteroid City, Maya Hawke’s custom black sequined A-line Prada dress came together with a matching bedazzled swim cap and classic black pumps, styled by Harry Lambert.
As stylish as ever, Jeff Goldblum arrived in a slate blue Prada suit with a cream-colored shirt with an exaggerated collar and fuzzy yellow detailing, plus a salmon pink shirt underneath. He anchored his ensemble with a monochromatic thin tie, yellow-framed glasses with glossy chunky shoes.
Adrien Brody looked dapper in a cream-colored tailored Brioni suit and an open white button-down dress shirt with polished leather Chelsea boots for the occasion.
Dylan Mulvaney stepped out in a black Stella McCartney ensemble, comprising of a button-up vest, an asymmetrical skirt and a jacket thrown over her shoulders, teamed with star-scattered black knee-high cowboy boots.
Rupert Friend walked the carpet, adopting the desert shades of the backdrop. The actor chose a camel brown boxy suit, consisting of a single-breasted jacket emblazoned with a bumblebee pin on his lapel, a V-neck knit coffee-colored top beneath, ultra-wide-legged trousers and matching brown leather boots.
Glee alum Dianna Agron kept it classically chic in a black pantsuit, consisting of a slouchy double-breasted blazer jacket, cropped tapered trousers and black strappy sandals. Agron pulled her hair back into a sleek bun with a side-part and rocked a statement red lip.
Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson
Tom Hanks and his wife, actress Rita Wilson matched in monochromatic black for Asteroid City‘s New York premiere. While Hanks sported a classic black suit, sans tie, Wilson wore a silky pantsuit with a black lace camisole and layered gold chain necklaces.
Succession star Hope Davis wore a white suit from Lafayette 148 New York’s Resort 2023 collection, dressing it up with eccentric accessories, like a colourful silk scarf tied around her neck, a mustard yellow handbag and shearling Mary Jane red mules.
