Like an oasis in the desert, the Giorgio Armani Spring/Summer 2023 women’s wear is set in a room adorned with bamboo. It’s a recurring element in the Armani world, for both the runway and Armani Casa. Despite being lightweight, bamboo is a symbol of resilience, virtues shared among the designer and the durable plant. It might only be mere runway decoration for the season, but its gentleness is translated perfectly into Armani’s womenswear, sprinkled with glamour.

All that glitters is, in this case, gold. Named the Fil d’Or (Golden Thread), the gilded collection features jacquard duster coats, sarouel trousers, and flowy skirts embellished with sequins, crystals and coloured beads. On the one hand, the flows and drapes exude goddess-like elegance; and on the other, Eastern influences are hard to miss. We spot the core characteristics of the kurta, chiton, and qipao reiterated and incorporated into the designs upon timeless textiles like silk and linen, interlacing with a graceful amount of sheerness with the tulle. It’s high fashion meets modest wear.

To top it off, layered resin necklaces and bijoux were added. Accented in gold tones, the sandals and high-top sneakers are comfort and luxury encapsulated. To complement the lightness of the materials used, Mandela—a symbol that captured the sense of inner lightness, frequents the pieces. The spiritual notion is invariably imbued throughout the collection, from the setting to the smallest details of the garments. The artisanship is impeccable.

Now, let’s move on to our favourite part of the collection: colours. Gold threads aside, the first few silver looks segued seamlessly into a subdued shade of azure. Fun fact: blue is actually Mr Armani’s favourite colour! Cascading to a darker tone of purple, the looks are painted cohesively, in Future Dusk, the recently announced Colour of 2025. Lastly, the finale looks in soft subdued golden neutral. Collectively, the pieces remind us of a desert mirage. When the evanescent glow hits the gold, it creates a dreamlike and ethereal feast for the eyes.
