It’s Not a Stretch to Say This: Skinny Jeans Are Back

Trigger warning.

Many of us are able to recall it all too well—the struggle of slipping into a pair of skinny jeans without breaking a sweat, front pockets that threaten to spit our phones back out, and just the mere discomfort of wearing a pair for hours. At the mention of skinny jeans, many feel instantly repulsed, as they recall the years between the late 2000s and early 2010s, especially after having tasted the freedom and airiness that comes with a wide-leg pant.

This controversial silhouette, supplying the skin-tight feel of a legging, but the coarseness and rigidity of woven fabric, was a defining moment of the indie sleaze era—think vintage band tees, wedge high top sneakers, and leather moto jackets. But before dominating streetstyle, it was a symbol of alternative culture, rock-and-roll, and youthful sex appeal with stars like Elvis Presley and James Dean championing the look in the 1950s.

The fashion world’s withdrawal from skinny jeans began in the late 2010s, happening as a natural result of fashion’s pendulum swing—like from quiet luxury, to bold maximalism; from micro mini-skirts, to maxi skirts. Not long after, however, the pandemic hit, catapulting looser and baggier silhouettes for jeans into the limelight. As comfort came up top on the list of priorities when it came to dressing, thanks to years of attending Zoom meetings and online lectures with sweatpants below our thrown-on blazers and dress shirts, skinny jeans slunk back into the shadows of our wardrobes—deliberately forgotten.

With these ultra-tight drainpipe jeans being such a divisive member of the denim family, it came as a surprise to many at the theory of its coming back. Nevertheless, endorsed by runways and fashion’s recurring habit of switching things up, it’s safe to say that this resurgence is no longer simply a speculation.

The revival of skinny jeans this year began from the runway, starting with designers like Michael Rider’s debut for Celine’s Spring 2026, where many razor-slim pants were paired with oversized boxy blazers, or Demna showcasing painted-on, low-slung black trousers and slim denim at the Gucci pre-fall 2026 show. Meanwhile at Dior, Jonathan Anderson styled men in slim, sharp denim paired with statement sparkly tanks and rocker-inspired layers, and Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons leaned into hip-hugging, nostalgic retro skinny lines at Prada’s Spring/Summer 2027 menswear show.

While reintroducing the skinny jeans back into our day-to-day outfit circulation may seem a bit intimidating, the formula to make it work ultimately lies in the styling, whether tucked into knee-high boots or neutralised with an oversized jacket or blazer. Additionally, the return of skinny jeans in 2026 has taken a more-breathable shape, widening ever so slightly past the knees to create a straight-leg or flared look. This creates more structure while still appearing sleek, rather than causing onlookers to worry about your blood circulation.

A number of celebrities embracing the comeback of skinny jeans are also proof that the cigarette-leg silhouette still has a place in our modern-day wardrobes. Go down the retro road by pairing it with a raglan tee or a basic white tank like Dua Lipa and Bella Hadid, or dress it up with a unique top combination featuring a statement colour like Zara Larsson. For the daring, get crafty with your old skinny jeans and turn them into capris.
