For a spirit as free as Hana Roanne, it takes a true virtuoso to capture and translate her many facets into a slew of cover-worthy makeup looks. From reviving the past version of Roanne for the lens to painting her future self into corporeality, we speak to professional makeup artist Cat Yong, going over every inch of detail that goes into Hana Roanne’s beauty look for the GRAZIA Malaysia cover.
Ahead, Yong shares her approach to the makeup at the set, walking us through her favourite Chanel Beauty products to use to let Hana Roanne’s inner radiance bloom forth, as well as expert techniques she used to achieve the looks.
What was the inspiration behind the makeup?
The inspiration was a modern take on effortless Parisian beauty. Hana Roanne has beautiful oriental features, so my approach was to enhance her natural structure rather than overpower it. I focused on luminous skin, soft sculpting, and subtle definition to keep the look elegant and timeless. Using Chanel Beauty, I wanted the makeup to feel refined, fresh, and luxurious while still very natural on camera.
Overall, I also made sure the makeup complemented the styling direction. I worked closely with stylist Joseph, matching the tones and mood of the look with his references so the beauty and fashion felt cohesive.

How about the preparation?
Skin preparation is always the most important step for me. I began with hydrating skincare to ensure the skin looked fresh and plump under studio lighting. I also spent some time doing a gentle facial massage to stimulate circulation and bring natural radiance to the skin.
After moisturising, I applied a lightweight primer only where needed to smooth the texture and help the makeup last throughout the shoot. My goal during prep is always to create a balanced canvas that is hydrated, smooth, and naturally glowing so the base sits seamlessly on the skin and lasts throughout the shoot.
When you first saw Hana Roanne on set, what was your immediate vision?
My vision was fresh, luminous, and quietly sophisticated. I also wanted her to look like the most refined version of herself with glowing skin, softly sculpted features, and eyes that felt subtly defined rather than overly dramatic.
Because Hana Roanne already has very elegant features, the makeup was about refinement and balance to enhance her natural beauty while maintaining the timeless aesthetic of Chanel Beauty.
Walk us through the makeup steps
Foundation

I started with Les Beiges Water Fresh Complexion Touch foundation to create a water-fresh complexion and radiant base. I applied it in thin layers using a brush and then gently pressed it into the skin with a sponge to ensure it melted seamlessly into the skin. The finish was natural and glowing, allowing the skin to still look like skin under the camera.
Concealer

For concealer, I focused mainly on brightening the under-eye area and lightly correcting around the nose and centre of the face. I applied it sparingly and blended it with a small brush and fingertips to keep the coverage lightweight.
Eyes

The eyes were kept soft and refined. I used neutral tones with a satin finish to subtly define the crease and enhance the eye shape. Everything was blended very softly to maintain an effortless feel while still giving depth on camera.
Cheeks

I added a soft contour along the cheekbones and temples to create subtle dimension without looking overly sculpted. As for blush, it was applied slightly higher on the cheeks and blended toward the temples to bring warmth and freshness to the face.
Lip

For the lips, I chose a refined shade that complemented the overall look, keeping it polished but still natural and matched with the look she was wearing.
Finishing Touch

Finally, I set the makeup lightly with powder only where necessary and finished with a soft setting spray to lock everything in while maintaining the natural glow.
