Yearning for some more regency drama now that season four of Bridgerton has come to an end? Well, do we have news for you: there’s a possibility that Netflix could deliver another spin-off season, à la Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.
When Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story landed on the streaming platform in 2023, it was a welcome glimpse into another of the Bridgerton universe’s characters: the story of a young Queen Charlotte, and her relationship with a young King George.
It remains the show’s only spin-off to date, and fans have been desperately wondering when our next one might arrive. Of course, there are a million Bridgerton characters who are worthy of some extra screen time – but now, executive producer Shonda Rhimes has teased exactly which character she’d consider focusing on next.
Saying on the Glass Half Full podcast that there has ‘definitely’ been talks of a second spin-off series, Shonda revealed, ‘That’s an area that we’re excited about and know that that could be really rich and really mined well.’
It’s not the first time the Bridgerton team have teased some spin-offs. It was something director Tom Verica touched on earlier this year, telling Deadline, ‘[Queen Charlotte] was more of a smaller look at a particular love story that spanned over those episodes, and I think we kind of caught something that people really responded to. So we are in talks of some other projects and hopefully, something, some news, something will be coming out at some point. Hopefully.’
Of course, there’s long been talks between loyal fans of the show over which Bridgerton characters they’d love to see more of – from newbie Posy to footman John.
So, who would Shonda focus on? She shared on the podcast, ‘I’ve always said I thought that if we were going to do something like that, Violet would be a great person to tell the story about – the Bridgerton mum. Yeah, that’s a possibility.’
The matriarch of the Bridgerton family, Violet – played by Ruth Gemmell – has fast become a fan favourite since the show’s first season in 2020. While the last series saw her explore her relationship with Lord Marcus Anderson, a deep dive into Violet’s past could be a tear jerker – likely delving into her love story with her late husband, Edmund Bridgerton.
And given Julia Quinn’s novella Violet In Bloom – a story that details Violet’s life from childhood, up to falling in love with her late husband Edmund – there’s plenty of material for Bridgerton writers to draw on. Opening up about her book, Julia previously said, ‘Readers clamoured for me to write a happy ending for Violet, but I couldn’t. Truly, I couldn’t – I really don’t think I could write a hero good enough for her. But I, too, wanted to learn more about Violet, and it was a labour of love to write.’
We’re keeping our fingers crossed.
