Watchlist: 16 Best Movies & TV Shows to Catch in April

Now that the glitz and glamour of awards season has settled, we’re ready for the Oscar nominees of 2027. On the big screen, the long-awaited Michael Jackson biopic Michael is the talk of the town, capturing the legacy of bona fide pop royalty. Meanwhile, on streaming services, we’re seeing a return of many favourites, including Beef, and hopefully, with the same unhingedness featuring its new cast. In XO, Kitty, Kitty Song Covey is back for her third and final year at the Korean Independent School of Seoul. And for a blast from the past, Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair is reuniting our favourite dysfunctional family after twenty years. 

Whether you’re looking to remind yourself of why you love going to the cinema or for some nostalgic comfort, there’s no shortage of choice in terms of what to watch this month. Read ahead for April’s new releases, coming to streaming and theatres.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Jaafar Jackson, Michael Jackson’s very own nephew, the King of Pop is getting a biopic. The film follows the singer’s journey from child star to pop-music sensation, featuring an impressive supporting cast of Colman Domingo, Nia Long, and Miles Teller. Revisiting some of his most iconic performances, the film also gives us a look at Jackson’s life beyond the stage, from his family life to legal controversies. As it’s one of the most anticipated releases of 2026, and likely the decade, you’ll want to secure those tickets ASAP. It’s going to be a big one.

Beef, Season 2

Following a phenomenal first season starring Steven Yeun and Ali Wong, the Emmy-winning anthology returns with a fresh cast, a different tone and the new high-society setting of an elite country club. Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan are the leads this time around as a rich couple whose explosive, private argument is witnessed and recorded by two Gen-Z employees, played by Charles Melton and Cailee Spaeny. As much as we’ll miss Danny and Amy, we’re eager to see how the new season’s ‘beef’ will play out—we’ve got our fingers crossed.

Jonah Hill returns to the director’s chair with this dark comedy, starring Hollywood heavyweights Keanu Reeves, Cameron Diaz, Matt Bomer, Jonah Hill himself, and even Martin Scorsese. Reef Hawk, played by Reeves, is a Hollywood icon whose new life is thrown into chaos when a video from his past surfaces as part of an extortion plot. Forced into a reluctant ‘redemption tour’, he has help from his crisis lawyer and his lifelong friends in confronting his past, forced to reckon with his hidden demons.

Your Friends & Neighbors, Season 2

Jon Hamm is back as Andrew ‘Coop’ Cooper in a second season that will be even higher stakes than the first for Westmont Village’s undercover burglar. Following the tension and turmoil of season one, Coop is doubling down on his secret life as a suburban thief to maintain his family’s lifestyle and its carefully constructed facade, but it’s all about to be put to the test. In a turn of events, James Marsden (we all cheered) is joining the cast as Westmont’s newest resident, threatening to expose Coop’s secrets once and for all.

Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair

Twenty years after the original series’ finale, the ‘Wilkerson’ family are officially back for a very special four-part revival. Now an adult, Malcolm is living a quiet, peaceful life with his daughter and girlfriend, only to be dragged back into the family chaos when he has to attend his parent’s 40th wedding anniversary. While most of the beloved original cast will be returning, like Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek, Caleb Ellsworth-Clark and Vaughan Murrae will be taking over as Dewey and Kelly. If you’re in the mood for some early 2000s nostalgia, it’s sure to be a fun ride as ever.

Hacks, Season 5

Returning for its fifth and final season, the Emmy-winning comedy Hacks picks the story back up in the chaotic aftermath of season four. Jean Smart and Hannah Einbender are back for the last time as the ever-dysfunctional duo, comedian Deborah Vance and writer Ava Daniels, heading to Las Vegas on a final mission. Determined to cement Deborah’s legacy as a legendary comedian, this is our girls’ last hurrah.

Criminal Record, Season 2

Rival detectives June Lenker and Daniel Hegarty are forced into another alliance this season. A stabbing at a political rally starts as a straightforward, joint hunt for a killer, but quickly escalates into a much larger, more complicated case. Putting their great minds together, they have to uncover a dangerous bomb plot in the heart of London, all whilst undercover. For a very tense game of cat-and-mouse, you’ll want to tune into this thriller starring BAFTA Award winner Peter Capaldi and Critics Choice Award nominee Cush Jumbo.

XO, Kitty, Season 3

XO, Kitty is a Koreaboo’s dream, and one that isn’t ready to be over just yet. Kitty Song Covey is back in Seoul for her final year at KISS, ready to make some senior year memories with friends and Min Ho, but of course, things don’t always work out the way you may hope. For longtime fans of the franchise, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before’s Lara Jean Covey, played by Lana Condor, is set to make a return, joining her sister in figuring out how to finally accept growing up.

Margo’s Got Money Troubles

A24 is treating us once again. In this family drama, Elle Fanning stars as Margo Millet, a college dropout, former Hooters waitress, and new mother who turns to OnlyFans to escape her financial crisis and stay afloat. Based on the hit novel by Rufi Thorpe, the limited series takes us on Margo’s journey to internet stardom—with all its trials and tribulations—as Michelle Pfeffier as Margo’s mother and Nick Offerman as her father join her for the ride.

In this thriller, Charlize Theron gets chased by Taron Egerton. What the hell, sure. Theron stars as Sasha, a rock climber looking for a peaceful solo adventure, but things take a terrifying turn when she encounters a mysterious stranger in the wilds. Played by Taron Egerton, the stranger who’s actually a serial killer, hunts Sasha through the Australian wilderness, putting her skill and survival instincts to the ultimate test. While Sasha’s running for her life, we’ll be on the edge of our seats, nervously sweating with our hearts pounding.

Running Point, Season 2

Kate Hudson as Isla Gordon is back as the President of the Los Angeles Waves, now having to face the reality of what it takes to keep the team together, in this workplace comedy. After a first season proving she was more than a reformed party girl, her brother Cam, played by Justin Theroux, is plotting to swipe his old job back. Created by Mindy Kaling, Ike Barinholtz, and David Stassen, the show’s got even more stars like Nicole Richie and Lisa Rinna to make the season all the more hilarious.

Bloodhounds, Season 2

This season, after successfully dismantling a loan shark ring, the boxing duo, Gun-woo and Woo-jin, encounter an even more formidable adversary. K-pop icon and actor Rain is joining the cast as this season’s antagonist—a mastermind who will stop at nothing to pull the best-friend boxing partners into his dark world of crime. As the two are facing up against a global illegal boxing syndicate, we’re excited for the action-packed fight choreography and drama to make a return to our television screens.

Hosted by Hart, the show features other beloved comedians like Keegan-Michael Key, Nikki Glaser and Chelsea Handler, all helping to find comedy’s next rising star. With the ultimate prize of their very own Netflix stand-up special up for grabs, every contestant has to give it their all. The show also gives the audience the chance to vote in real time to help crown the winner, too, so hopefully, we’re in for some big, hearty and wheezy laughs.

Narrated by Josh Gad in celebration of Earth Day, Orangutan journeys into our lush canopies of Southeast Asia. Directed by Mark Linfield, the documentary follows Indah, an adolescent orangutan who’s preparing to leave her family and discover the wild on her own for the first time. With their daytime naps and extraordinary personalities—not only are they relatable—there never seems to be a dull moment with these playful primates.

Stranger Things: Tales From ’85

Post-series depression? We’ve all been there. If you still need to scratch that Stranger Things itch, Netflix is bringing back the town of Hawkins with an animated spin-off series. Set in the winter of 1985, between seasons 3 and 4, the D&D party have to solve a new paranormal mystery to protect the town. The series has the same ‘80s nostalgia and adventure that fans fell in love with, just with a new format and an ally to befriend.

Gold Land

Premieres 27 April on Netflix

Written by Oldboy’s Hwang Jo-yoon and directed by Kim Sung-hoon, the Korean thriller Gold Land is finally out this month. In this series, Park Bo-young plays an airport security officer who happens upon a stash of smuggled gold bars, becoming the target of a ruthless crime ring. Forced on the run by the criminals pursuing her, it’ll be a battle of wits for her survival in a world of greed and violence. Co-starring Kim Sung-cheol and Lee Kwang-soo, the series launches with a two-episode premiere, then two episodes every Wednesday.
