After nearly eight years together, Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin have reportedly decided to go their separate ways. According to People, multiple sources have confirmed the split—this time, one insider claims, “it feels final.”
Their relationship, described as “on-off” over the years, has always been shrouded in privacy. However, despite rarely appearing in public together and speaking only sparingly about each other in interviews, the couple were said to be deeply committed. A March 2024 report revealed they had been “engaged for years,” but were in “no rush to get married.”
Neither Johnson, 35, nor Martin, 48, has commented on the news.
The actress, who is currently in New York promoting her new film Materialists, has been attending press events alone. The couple were last photographed together in May, ahead of Johnson’s solo appearance at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.
Breakup rumours have trailed the pair before—last August, their representative firmly shut down reports from TMZ and the Daily Mail, asserting they were “happily together.” Yet whispers about their relationship persisted, in part due to their seemingly independent lives. One source said, “Every time they’re not spotted together, there are breakup rumours.”
In a March interview with Bustle, Johnson offered a rare, tender glimpse into their dynamic.
“I love watching him [perform]… I’m watching my most favourite being do his most favourite thing,” she told the outlet. She also spoke lovingly of Martin’s children, whom he shares with ex Gwyneth Paltrow: “I love those kids like my life depends on it.”
With the pair never even walking a red carpet or sharing a photo on social media together throughout their years as a couple, it’s safe to say that this chapter will also be closing just as quietly as it was lived.
