The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7 is as fun as it is functional

When it comes to combining nostalgia and modern technology, nothing encompasses this better than the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7. Millennials want a slice of the 00s pie, while Gen Z-ers want their chance at living the 00s life—yet both can’t live without the comforts of a full LCD screen, 50MP cameras, 4K HD video, and the works. We get it. Or rather, Samsung got it—and now, the Galaxy Z Flip enters its seventh and best iteration yet.

Recently announced at the Galaxy Unpacked 2025 show and promptly launched alongside the Galaxy Z Fold7, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7 comes with a whole host of upgrades in its nifty 188g clamshell. We managed to get our hands on the Blue Shadow version—a gorgeous shade of dark electric blue—and here’s what we think so far.

Oh my days, the screen

Right off the bat, the FlexWindow is the first thing that caught our eyes when the smartphone is closed. The outer screen now boasts an edge-to-edge display with an upgraded 120Hz refresh rate as well as a peak brightness of 2,600 nits. We now have more real estate to play around with widgets on the cover display, plus taking selfies just got to a whole new level, keeping things visible even outside on a sunny day. When unfolded, the Z Flip7 boasts a 6.9-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with the same 120Hz refresh rate for an ultra-fluid touch experience.

The new Z Flip7 is also thinner than its predecessor at 13.7mm while folded; the Armor FlexHinge is also thinner than the hinge on the previous generation and features a restructured design and high-strength materials for smoother folds and long-lasting durability. Overuse seems to no longer be an issue, and you can also keep the phone open at a 120-degree angle when on calls for that added banana phone vibe.

Camera capabilities

Everyone is an influencer these days—or attempting to be one. While we don’t all have a team of photographers and videographers tailing us to get our best angles, we can only attempt to do it ourselves for now. Luckily, the Z Flip7 makes this very easy to do. The front-facing camera is quite nearly irrelevant, because why use a 10MP selfie camera when you can use the 50MP camera while ensuring your angles are accounted for with the cover screen? Yes, the act of filming yourself has now been taken to greater heights. During my recent work trip to Ipoh, I got to document the entire thing with the Z Flip7 and suffice to say, it was a great help.

Nifty usage on the go

Phone screens are getting larger every year, and the Z Flip7 is no exception. In fact, have you seen the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7? Yet, one of the features I enjoyed about the Z Flip7 was using features through the cover screen. There’s something cute and pared back about replying to messages and using Google Maps through the FlexWindow, without needing to open the phone. Google’s AI Gemini is also accessible through the FlexWindow, so I could easily ask Gemini anything—like where the nearest Korean BBQ restaurant to me is located—with the phone closed.

That said, not all apps are optimised to be used fully through the FlexWindow. Hopefully, this changes in the future, especially with the FlexWindow screen taking up full real estate on the cover.

The bottom line?

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7 is an extremely fun phone to use. It’s sleek, it’s flashy, and the best part is that these features don’t make it a gimmicky phone. On a day-to-day basis, the Z Flip7 functions well while closed and opened, and the transition between both is fairly seamless. It’s a 10 out of 10 for me.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7 is priced at RM4,999 and is available for pre-order here.
