Come on Barbie, let’s go (watch) party!

‘Tis the season of summer blockbusters! While a number of Hollywood tentpoles such as Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Barbie, and Oppenheimer vie for the top spot in the box office chart, streamers are right there on their heels with an equally exciting slate of movies and TV shows. Either way, the verdict is out and the winner is… us moviegoers.

Insidious: The Red Door

Premieres 5th July in cinemas

Fans of the Insidious franchise, rejoice! The horror series’ original cast is returning to the big screen with Patrick Wilson, the patriarch of the Lambert family, also in the director’s chair. Insidious: The Red Door sees Josh and his son, a college-aged Dalton, going deeper into The Further to face their demons, which in turn will reveal the family’s dark past and more.

Shadow Detective (Season Two)

Premieres 5th July on Disney+ Hotstar

It’s been over a year since the world last heard from the “Friend”. Detective Taekrok has moved on and he’s settling into his new role at the police force’s Women and Juveniles Unit. But the ceasefire turns out to be short-lived as an unexplainable explosion breaks in Geumo city and Taekrok is once again stuck in a web of lies and conspiracies, trying to wiggle himself out of it.

The Out-Laws

Premieres 7th July on Netflix

For the perfect stream for a date night, look no further than The Out-Laws. The action comedy follows Owen Browning, a square-toed manager, whose bank is robbed by the Ghost Bandits, during his wedding week. Conjecturing that his future in-laws are the infamous outlaws, he soon finds himself in a situation that would compromise his morals.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One

Premieres 12th July in cinemas

“A field agent on a mission to track down a weapon of mass destruction before it falls into the wrong hands” may not be the most groundbreaking premise for a movie but we’re not complaining. One of our last movie stars, Tom Cruise, is reprising his role as Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, so we can at least expect some bold and inventive action sequences.

The Afterparty (Season Two)

Premieres 12th July on Apple TV+

Last year’s sleeper hit, The Afterparty, has been renewed for a second season. This time around, Detective Danner finds herself trying to solve another mystery at an ill-fated wedding where the groom is murdered and every guest is a suspect. Through the series’ signature “mind movies”, each suspect offers viewers a retelling of the weekend from their own viewpoint and visual style.

Barbie

Premieres 20th July in cinemas

The time has come. After months–nay–years of anticipation, the live-action Barbie finally hits the theatres this month. The Margot Robbie-led fantasy comedy takes off as Barbie begins to have an existential crisis—questioning her mortality at a giant blowout party and all—and is forced to leave Barbie Land for the real world, where she will learn the truth about the universe.

Oppenheimer

Premieres 20th July in cinemas

If there’s ever a time for a double feature, it’s now. Opening in cinemas on the same day as Barbie, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is an IMAX-shot epic thriller about American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer and his role in the making of the atomic bomb. Cillian Murphy stars as the titular character and Emily Blunt plays his biologist and botanist wife Katherine.

Stephen Curry: Underrated

Premieres 21st July on Apple TV+

One of this year’s Sundance breakouts, Stephen Curry: Underrated, is heading to the small screen this month. The critically acclaimed sports documentary narrates an astonishing coming-of-age story of the renowned basketball player and four-time NBA champion Stephen Curry, marrying intimate cinéma vérité, archival footage, and on-camera interviews.

Talk To Me

Premieres 27th July in cinemas

It is the anniversary of her mother’s passing and Mia is looking for something to get her mind off it. Intrigued by the latest teenage trend of conjuring spirits, she participates in a séance where she makes contact with an entity via an eerie embalmed hand. Hooked on the new thrill, suppressing her grief, she takes it a step too far and unleashes horrifying supernatural forces.

Who knew the toy industry could be so cutthroat? The Beanie Bubble follows a demoralised toy salesman Ty Warner who strikes gold upon his encounters with three women. Headlined by Zach Galifianakis, Elizabeth Banks, Sarah Snook, and Geraldine Viswanathan, the movie turns the spotlight on the hidden figures behind one of the most lucrative businesses in the world.
