Society of the Snow

Premieres 4th January on Netflix

One of the award season’s breakout hits is headed to Netflix this month. Shortlisted in the International Feature, Makeup and Hairstyling, Original Score, and Visual Effects categories at the upcoming Academy Awards, the J.A. Bayona-directed feature is set in 1972 when the Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, flying a rugby team to Chile, crashes on a glacier in the desolate Andes.

The Brothers Sun

Premieres 4th January on Netflix

Michelle Yeoh is booked and busy, and we love to see it. Her next outing sees the Oscar-winning actress kicking it up a notch, literally, as Mama Sun whose family becomes the target of a mysterious enemy. Together with her sons Charles and Bruce—who’s oblivious to the family’s secret—she must mend their broken relationship in order to face Taipei’s deadliest societies.

Foe

Premieres 5th January on Prime Video

What would you do if a stranger came to your house and proclaimed that you would be sent to a space station for about two years while your spouse was left in the company of your biomechanical duplicate? This is the dilemma that Hen and Junior must deal with. The Garth Davis-directed sci-fi drama stars Academy Awards nominees Saoirse Ronan and Paul Mescal.

Good Grief

Premieres 5th January on Netflix

We have to say, seeing the sassy David Rose of Schitt’s Creek all sombre and sorrowful is not on our bingo card this year. Dan Levy returns to the small screen with Good Grief—an incisive look into love and loss. Grieving the passing of his husband, Levy’s Marc goes on a trip to Paris with his two best friends where he’s confronted with some unresolved issues.

Premieres 10th January on Disney+ Hotstar

Hawkeye hive, assemble! Here’s another spin-off that shall further enrich your Marvel-lous universe. Echo reintroduces you to the titular character Maya Lopez who is faced with the consequences of her ruthless action. A thrilling origin story with a big heart, the five-episode miniseries features a breakout performance by Alaqua Cox.

An old, high-profile murder case involving a young woman and a man in a position of power resurfaces after two reputable detectives receive an anonymous phone call. Set in modern-day London, this eight-episode crime thriller tackles the themes of race, institutional failure, and the pursuit of finding common ground in a divided country.

Black Cake

Premieres 10th January on Disney+ Hotstar

Some people get a fat cheque as an inheritance, some are left with a voice recording and a black cake. Byron and Benny’s lives turn upside down following the death of their mother Eleanor Bennett. The revelation about her past, which includes a murder allegation and a long-lost child, leaves the siblings befuddled and questioning their own identities.

Role Play

Premieres 12th January on Prime Video

There’s a lot one can learn about their partner through role-playing. In David’s case, he unknowingly learns that his wife and the mother of his two children, Emma, is an assassin for hire. Their perfect, suburban life is then disturbed by the intervention of law enforcement, leading him on a mission of his own to save their marriage. The series stars Kaley Cuoco and David Oyelowo.

Austin Butler, Barry Keoghan, Ncuti Gatwa. Our favourite heartthrobs and internet boyfriends suited up for an action-packed drama that follows the 100th Bomb Group aka the “Bloody Hundredth” as they go on bombing raids over Nazi Germany. The limited series is brought to us by award-winning producers Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, and Gary Goetzman.
