Avant Guard is a series that digs into a personality’s fashion hacks, dos and don’ts, red flags, and more. In this edition, Rubini talks all things fashion—from controversial opinions to what she has on her current fashion wish list.
“My proudest achievement to date is winning Miss International Malaysia 2014,” confessed Rubini, a model who ventured into acting and had recently made her lead debut through the Tamil series, Aadhira. For local audiences, Rubini is known for being a pageant titleholder who has graced the front cover of magazines and runways. For others, she is widely recognised as the Malaysian representative on Cycle 6 of Asia’s Next Top Model. “I hope I have inspired girls around the globe,” the 33-year-old enthuses.
The last time we met at the MOG Eyewear event, she strode into the room in her black lace-up boots and matching leather rider jacket, with nonchalant black shades perched on her face. Her presence was immediately felt not just because she towered over the crowd but also because she entered the room with overflowing confidence, exuding a hint of rebellion that had all eyes fixed on her. Those who are familiar with her, however, would agree that under that suave get-up lies a gentle yet bright personality, which becomes clear when she chirped that the one item she cannot leave the house without is her colourful socks.
Ahead, Rubini shares her fashion preferences—controversial opinions, biggest pet peeves, and what’s on her current wishlist.
Confess a fashion crime that you have committed before
One of my biggest fashion missteps happened while I was Miss International Malaysia. A sponsor insisted I wear an all-white outfit paired with sky-high stiletto heels and such heavy, ashen makeup that I looked like a walking mannequin.
It was a total style faux pas—one that taught me the importance of trusting my instincts and politely declining anything that doesn’t flatter me. Never again!
A fashion item you cannot leave the house without
My colourful socks.

Three items that are on your fashion wish list right now
I love men’s clothes. It aligns with my style. What I have on my wish list now is the grey oversized blazer, along with the matching skirt pants from the Shals‘ “Coming of Age” collection, the Okayama 15oz Raw Japanese Denim Clasp Jacket from Shinzo, and this blue sweater from the latest Dior Men collection.
Your first luxury purchase
My beloved Dr. Marten boots. It cost me about RM1,500 and is a limited edition design. It’s been a good five years, and it’s still looking good.
A talent from the fashion industry you would like to work with
For now, anyone who’s working with Pedro Pascal. I’m obsessed with the Vanity Fair cover that featured him—from the styling to the charm he has with him. So, I’d like to work with Beat Bolliger.
A fashion tip you’re gatekeeping right now. Spill.
I don’t think I have much to keep, but I do thrift very often. At times, I find really good vintage items—Japan is a thrift heaven, but it’s too expensive.

What is your favourite fashion accessory?
My shoes are my greatest possessions: my boots and sneakers.
A trend that needs to die
People will hate me for saying this, but wearing leggings as trousers with visible camel toe needs to go.
A fashion red flag
I believe the trend of co-opting sacred symbols in fashion—reducing them to mere racy accessories and stripping them of the respect they deserve—has gone too far and must end.

A controversial fashion opinion you have
I don’t find it controversial to fuse batik with contemporary silhouettes, or to pair it with Indian jewellery. I think it makes a beautiful and bold style statement.
If you could only wear just one fashion brand for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Yohji Yamamoto.
Your lazy day outfit
Sweater and my treasured boots from Dr. Martens.
What is your last fashion purchase?
I recently bought a second pair of Adidas Samba sneakers in a different colourway.
Your biggest purchase regret
I can’t think of any because I consider myself a careful shopper. I wouldn’t buy something if I didn’t fancy it.

A song that will always get you in the mood to get ready
I have three. Feel Good Inc by Gorillaz, Gallowdance by Lebanon Hanover, and Staying Alive by Bee Gees.
A fashion memory you’d want to erase
Some from my pageant day, especially the white dress I mentioned previously.
A fashion icon that you’ve always looked up to
It’s definitely Michele Lamy and the late Abang Jiman.
Something from your wardrobe that you’d love to pass down
My thrifted Prada vest.
