Rings familiar?

If you think you’ve seen it all when it comes to t-shirts, think again. This is not about the ubiquitous graphic or logo tee; we are ringing in the ringers. With its colour-blocked sleeves and neckline, the ringer tee has officially become the wardrobe workhorse.

These colour-trimmed t-shirts are hardly a novelty in the fashion world. In fact, their current popularity stems precisely from the nostalgia and vintage sentiment they evoke, adding a layer of emotional depth to an otherwise no-fuss ensemble. If your first ringer tee was the one you wore at school for PE, that’s no coincidence. The style initially gained traction as a functional sports garment. The extra banding at the sleeves and collar were designed to resolve the overstretching or warping of necklines and cuffs. The contrasting trim later became a practical tool for sports teams, making it easier to distinguish players on the field aside from having numbers printed on the back of the tee. This origin story also explains the ringer tee’s resurgence as activewear continues to permeate our everyday lives; the style has followed suit, transcending the fitness spaces.

The ringer tee shed its sports origin and cemented its status as a symbol of youth culture during the 1970s, often adorned with vibrant graphics. It was embraced by musicians, icons of counterculture movements, and concert-goers alike. Cinephiles will recall the “Arnold is Numero Uno” white tee with black bands worn by Arnold Schwarzenegger, as seen in the 1977 bodybuilding documentary Pumping Iron. It’s a look that solidified the ringer tee as an emblem of the crossover of pop culture and sporting excellence. Modern TV series and movies that are set in the 70s and 80s, such as Stranger Things, have only further immortalised it.

By the 1990s, the ringer tee became prevalent within the skater community and the rock culture, with musicians such as Oasis members, Johnny Ramone, Blur’s Damon Albarn, and more, spotted in the tee both on and off stage. Fashion trendsetters of the era, including the Spice Girls, Chloë Sevigny, Alyson Hannigan in American Pie, and Alexis Bledel in Gilmore Girls, also championed the look. The adoration for this shirt persisted into the 2000s, when “It-girls” such as Britney Spears and Paris Hilton walked the streets in their ringer shirts. Now, in 2026, the ringer tee returns at the pinnacle of a nostalgic wave—a comforting escape from our increasingly fast-paced and unfamiliar digital world, where reaching for familiarity seems more grounding and reassuring amidst constant upheaval.

The tee has even made its way to the runways, featuring in Miu Miu Spring/Summer 2025 and in BTS Jungkook’s highly anticipated collaboration with Calvin Klein. ERL’s “I Did What Last Night” slogan tee in bright yellow with black trims, too, was monumental in 2025, adopted by K-pop idols (and their stylists), including Seventeen’s Mingyu, TXT’s Yeonjun, Taemin, and Yugyeom from GOT7, who collectively deemed it the summer uniform.

A year on, the ringer tee remains a wardrobe essential, sported by our style regulars such as Thai actresses Orm Kornnaphat, Lingling Kwong, Namtan Tipnaree, Tu Tontawan and more, as well as K-pop celebrities including Minnie from I-dle, Babymonster’s Ahyeon, and Jihyo from Twice, just to name a few.

And since the ringer tee is wonderfully gender neutral—its simple silhouette and design flatter every body type without adhering to rigid masculine or feminine codes, this inherent versatility means we can also easily take styling cues from the male idols. From the retro-washed Guess piece worn by Hyunjin from Stray Kids, the clean look by Phuwin Tangsakyuen and Gemini Norawit, and the eye-catching red bands on BTS V—frankly, why wouldn’t we?

There are no tips or tricks when it comes to styling the ringer tee. Our take is to just keep it pleasingly simple, with a trusty pair of denim jeans or bottoms of your choice—Blackpink’s Rosé and her popsicle-green silken midi skirt, for instance, screams summer like no one else.
