Things to Do and Events to Check Out in KL and PJ in September 2025

The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre: Fragments of Tuah

History, myth, and performance collide in this powerful theatre piece. The documentary-style production combines music, archival materials, and layered storytelling to reimagine Hang Tuah—the legendary warrior whose influence shaped notions of loyalty and identity in Malaysia. With over three years of research, the work transcends a simple biography to examine the gaps and contradictions in Tuah’s story. Audiences can expect a rich collage of state slogans, songs, historical erasures, and even imagined memories woven together into one timely stage experience.

Traditional wau-making is transformed with steel frames, LED lights, and vibrant fabrics to create a surreal space that blends memory and imagination. Other highlights include glowing rice granules turned into a cityscape in PADI-CITY as well as illuminated gliders in Wauscape, honouring the nation’s kite-making heritage. In collaboration with craftsmen from Kelantan and Sabah, it bridges the past and future together while inviting visitors to view Malaysia in a new light.

Blue Bird by Cheong Kiet Cheng

Chronicling two decades of Cheong Kiet Cheng’s life, shaped by illness, the exhibition is both an intimate memoir and a broader exploration of the theme of resilience. Drawing inspiration from Maurice Maeterlinck’s story The Blue Bird, Cheng reimagines its tale of hope as one that guides her children through life’s uncertainties. What makes this exhibition especially poignant is Cheng’s openness about her schizophrenia, which she reframes not as stigma but as a teacher and muse. It transforms suffering into a visual language of endurance, vulnerability, and healing.
