When I first heard the news of a new hair drying tool from Dyson, the first thought that popped in my mind was “How different can it be from the OG Supersonic?” Well, quite a lot actually. I have had a solid three weeks with the hair dryer since its Malaysian launch, and have put it through many tests for this Dyson r Hair Dryer review. Keep reading to see how it measures up.
Lighter than the Rest
The major plus from the new release is definitely the weight—or might I say, the lack thereof. Lighter by half than the classic Supersonic, it weighs at only 325g. That’s the mere weight of two phones these days. It is by far the biggest selling point of the product, and personally, I find this to be a game changer. Gone are the days of dealing with a sore arm, and my wrist could not be more thankful—especially when the rest of the day requires a lot of typing.
In addition to that, Dyson has truly put thought into the design. With a shorter nozzle, I am able to manoeuvre it around the head with practically little worry as to how far (and how close) my arms have to stretch out during the entire drying process. No matter which attachment I am using, the ease of use remains the same, completely accident-proof. On top of that, it also guarantees that I can get to those hard-to-reach spots without resorting to contorting my limbs.
No Attachment Issues Here
Speaking of attachments, each unit of the Dyson r Hair Dryer comes with five specific attachments, all of which has their own role. For day-to-day styling, my top three favourites are the powerful air attachment, the smoothing nozzle, and the flyaway attachment, used in that specific order. It is worth noting that I have relatively straight hair, and prefer to have it with some natural fluff.

With the powerful air attachment, my typical dry time is significantly cut down, leaving me with plenty more time for the rest of my routine. Once that is over and done with, I take the smoothing nozzle, which is designed to deliver more ions, to get rid of any unsightly frizz—and for this weather, the attachment is a true godsend. As a finishing touch, I attach the flyaway tool and give the crown of my hair a couple of passes to magically hide any flyaways to create a sleek finish.
The gentle air attachment and professional concentrators, though kept away most days, are perfect for when I do need it. As someone who deals with sensitive scalp, this gentle air attachment comes in clutch when I need it. It diffuses the air without sacrificing the dry time, which is a total feat by the Dyson team. Those with fine hair will also be pleased by this attachment, as it will not damage their delicate hair shaft and follicle. As for the professional concentrator, it gets taken on on serious styling days. Blowouts come out with better definition with little effort and lasts significantly longer, thanks to the efficient use of heat and powerful air, and the structure of the attachment.
It Does the Thinking for You
It goes without saying that in order for us to get the best of each attachment, we have to find that sweet spot between airflow and heat for our specific hair types. The machine has three air speeds, three heat levels, plus the necessary option of a cool shot to lock in hairstyles. But with five attachments, who has the time to remember all that? This is where the RFID sensors shines, because it will automatically adjust the motor and heater for the settings you have previously earmarked for your preference.

Of course, it does come preset with optimal use in mind, so you can get the best use right out the gate. Personally, I prefer a gentler dry because of how damaged my hair has gotten over multiple chemical jobs. That said, the Dyson r Hair Dryer is still a top contender in my roster of hair dryers because it just gets the job done so much faster, and again, with less work. And with the intelligent attachments? They just open so many doors and just compounds all the goodness that we’re already getting from the hair dryer.
Long Story Short

Clearly by now it’s obvious, that the Dyson r Hair Dryer is an instant favourite. From its ease of use down to all the functions that come with it, the hair dryer, for all its bells and whistles, is worth the splurge, especially is you’re already due for an upgrade.
But you don’t have to just take it from me. The hair dryer has been making headlines ever since it was unveiled during the Fall/Winter 2024 Fashion Week, with hairstyling superstars such as Sam McKnight, Lacy Redway, and Gary Gill choosing this as their tool for their work backstage, producing runway worthy hairstyles with the very same device.
Currently, the hair dryer comes in two colours, Ceramic Pink/Rose Gold and Jasper Plum. Knowing the brand, they will soon come out with more iconic colour ways. If you’re gunning for a specific colour combination, all you have to do is wait.
The Dyson Supersonic r Hair Dryer retails at RM2,599 at Dyson stores and dyson.my.
