It’s thrilling to see a heritage brand like Longchamp embrace creativity so wholeheartedly. While collaborating with artists is nothing new for the Parisian house, these partnerships have become an annual highlight we eagerly anticipate. This time around, Longchamp tapped the immensely talented textile artist Caroline Hélain for their first-ever partnership.
Renowned for her breathtaking textile artworks inspired by nature and landscape, Hélain has a knack for instilling a sense of calm in her audience. Her creative practice revolves around paysage art, where vivid colours and gentle freehand-cut strokes of fabric are assembled to create abstract and organic compositions. Patches of fabric in varied tactile designs come together to form nature lines—the craggy cliffs, rolling dunes and vast strips of sky. Through her hands, these serene views come to life, capturing the essence of the outdoors with a painterly approach that is both uplifting and soothing.
This meticulous attention to delicate detail and nuance echoes Longchamp’s storied savoir-faire. For this capsule collection, the artist has crafted nine distinct variations of landscapes, which adorn an array of covetable pieces, ranging from leather goods to ready-to-wear essentials.
We were particularly captivated by the reimagined Daylong pieces. Inspired by the classic bowling bags, the Daylong line features a streamlined and elongated silhouette that is practical for everyday use. Hélain’s signature motifs—layers of leather stitched together—wrap the exterior of two oblong models: the mini bag and the weekender, both perfect companions for a getaway thanks to their roomy design.
The collection extends to cosy knitwear, including sweaters and long figure-skimming dresses, where soft merino wool became the canvas for the artist’s colourful motifs. Elsewhere, a sleeveless top was crafted with two contrasting materials, where calf leather in rich cognac evokes the vastness of the dune, and a meticulously crafted panel of bouclé virgin wool captures the boundless blue sky. Echoing the free-spirited nature of her artwork, the capsule is thoughtfully rounded out with basics found in a nomadic wardrobe, such as silk scarves and cashmere squares. Even everyday staples like classic T-shirts and the Le Pliage cotton canvas tote bags get the artistic treatment. While the former comes with a front pocket adorned with a Hélain landscape motif, the latter features an artwork patch on the front of the bag.
